The concept of reconstruction. Case study of Bagrati Cathedral reconstruction, Georgia

The research focuses on the study of the concept of reconstruction and its debate in the heritage conservation field. While the topic is immense and widely written about, the study focuses on the reconstructions in the country of Georgia and analyzes it within the immediate (South Caucasus) and wider regional (Eastern Europe) contexts. The research will try to recapture the emergence and development of the concept and practice of reconstruction and its contemporary trend in Georgia.

The particular focus of the study will be on iconic monuments with a distinct symbolic meaning and which have been or were turned into symbols of national identity and pride. Substantial part of the research will base on the case study of Bagrati Cathedral reconstruction in order to explain the attitudes, approaches and practices of reconstruction present historically and currently in Georgia. While describing the entire history around the 11th century Bagrati Cathedral (UNESCO WHS since 1994) destroyed in 17th c , partially restored in the 20th c. and completely reconstructed this year, I will also give an overview of heritage protection system in Georgia throughout the life of the cathedral and analyze the current attitude towards the particular case and the outcomes it might have or already has on the development of heritage conservation system in Georgia.

My special need at this initial point of my research would be advice on methodology, formulating the research question and recommendations on the structure.
